From synths to sequencers: meet the pioneers of electronic music

Daphne Oram (1925-2003) was an electronic pioneer composer, inventor of the Oramics machine and a defender passionate about electronic music as a form of legitimate art. She co -founded the influential BBC radio workshop and has contributed significantly to the development of experimental sound techniques. Despite the study offer at the Royal College of Music in 1942, Oram chose to work as a junior studio engineer at the BBC, where his career in electronic music began.

In the mid -1940s, Oram composed music combining an acoustic orchestration with live electronics and turntables. She put pressure on the BBC to provide electronic musical installations and began to experiment with music concrete techniques, record, manipulate and complete band sounds.

In the 1950s, his revolutionary experiences with tape recorders culminated in the creation of the first fully electronic BBC score using oscillators, recorders and sinusoidal waves. This growing demand for electronic sounds led to the creation of the BBC radio workshop in 1958, which Oram co -founded.

Donted by the concentration of the BBC on the use of the workshop mainly for background music and the sound effects rather than on the original compositions, Oram left the organization a year after its foundation. She created her own studio, Oramiccs Studios for electronic composition, at Tower Folly. There, she explored her artistic vision in more detail, making up works for radio, cinema, advertisements, exhibitions and live performances. His unavnforced contributions even included sound effects for James Bond films such as Dr no And Rifle.

The most notable invention of Oram, the Oramics machine, was a system of synthesis and revolutionary sequencing of “Sound drawn”. It allowed users to draw wavelems, locations and volume envelopes on the film to generate sounds, embodying its innovative mind and its commitment to extend the limits of electronic music. Today, it is known as a pioneer whose contributions have helped to shape the evolution of electronic music.
